Protesters call solid waste management law 'catastrophic'

As lawmakers met to discuss and ultimately passed a controversial waste management law Monday, opponents staged a protest outside Parliament in Nijmeh Square, calling the legislation "catastrophic."

Discussions of the law were part of an agenda of 29 draft laws and proposals Parliament is tackling during its first legislative session since the May elections.

The Waste Management Coalition, which gathers civil society and environmental groups, had called on people to join the sit-in and demanded that MPs return the legislation to parliamentary committees for further study, the state-run National News Agency reported Sunday.

According to the legislation, which was passed in the afternoon after lengthy discussions, a national authority for waste management will be established and the institution will not be subject to the state’s oversight framework.
