Security 1st Half 2017

In the first half of 2017, 44% of the total incidents mapped fell under the Security dimension with shooting being the most mapped category and representing 25% of the incidents in the Security dimension. Shootings are also often also related to brawl/dispute which increases the intensity of these conflicts.
Baalbeck witnessed the highest level of conflictivity in the Security dimension during the first half of 2017. In fact, Baalbeck caza witnessed many suicide attacks during this period with no less than 6 incidents categorised as either suicide attack attempt or suicide bombing. Three of them happened the same day at the end of June when five terrorists blew themselves up during army raids on a Syrian refugees camp in Arsal.
Tripoli, Akkar, Baabda, and Saida all shared the second highest level of conflictivity in the Security dimension during the first half of 2017. In Tripoli, the number of incidents falling under the Security dimension highly increased compared to the second half of 2016. 86% of these incidents are relevant to Individual Acts of Violence, including robberies or murders, but also more intense conflicts related to illicit trade, brawl/dispute or shooting. In Akkar, 25% of incidents under the Security dimension are related to brawl/dispute and most of them evolved into a more violent conflict such as shooting or assault. In Baabda 43% of the Security dimension’s incidents are related to illicit trade with most of them involving the use of drugs, which explains the high level of intensity of conflictivity in this caza .
Saida, more than half of the incidents mapped during the first half of 2017 fall under the Security dimension among which 86% are classified as Individual Acts of Violence. Moreover, the majority of these incidents are located in Ain el-Helweh, indicating the instability within the camp, notably after the dissolution of the Palestinian Joint Security Forces in February 2017.
