Pact for Strengthening Civil Peace in Lebanon
In 2013, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) worked with Lebanese media on the ‘Journalists’ Pact for Strengthening Civil Peace in Lebanon’ (mithaq al-sharaf al-eaalame ltaaziz al-selm al-ahli fi lobnan). This project was an extension of UNDP’s Peace Building Project and focused on issues of language and terms of violence used in journalism, particularly in the evening news. It aimed to deal with political tensions and armed conflicts in several areas including Tripoli through reaffirming the Lebanese media’s leading role in refusing discrimination and promoting civil peace. It targeted 32 editors-in-chiefs and senior media representatives who reviewed and signed the Pact. UNDP partnered with Maharat to conduct a follow-up monitoring and evaluation process of the media outlets’ commitment to the pact.
