Establishment of the Ministry of Grand Planning (MoGP) and the Office of Social Development

Friday, January 1, 1954

The MoGP was created during the mandate of President Camille Chamoun and the government of Sami al Solh, who also headed the MoGP upon its establishment. However, it wasn’t until 1959 that it became operational, under Fouad Chehab’s presidency and Rachid Karami’s government. The MoGP was divided into two directorates: the directorate of Studies and Planning and the Central Directorate of Statistics. The first was dismantled in 1977 when the ministry was replaced with the Council of Development and Reconstruction (CDR).
