Armed Conflict 2nd half 2016
The districts of Hasbaya, Sour, and Maarjayoun have all witnessed intermediate to high levels of Armed Conflictivity in the second half of 2016. Of the 150 Armed Conflict incidents within these districts, 146 involved the Israeli Military as an actor, including land and sea violations, Military Deployments, and Explosions.
The district of Saida saw moderate to high levels of Armed Conflictivity in the second half of 2016. Notably, 85% of Armed Conflict incidents in this district were concentrated in the Ain el-Hilweh refugee camp located South East of the centre of Saida. This can be due to the rise of tensions in the camp which have been explored by our research centre in further detail here.
Baalbeck witnessed the 2nd highest intensity of Armed Conflictivity during the 2nd half of 2016 with 83% of Armed Conflict incidents related to the Border Conflict with Syria. These incidents mainly included the use of Heavy Artillery as well as Clashes between the LAF and Armed Militants affiliated to terrorist organisations, such as Al Nusra and the Islamic State, located in the outskirts of Ras Baalbek and Arsal.
Even though Tripoli did not witness a high number of incidents within the Armed Conflict dimension, the 14 armed incidents mapped in this Caza still had a high intensity as more than half of these incidents were categorised as Explosions, with Hand grenades randomly tossed in front of buildings or on the side of the road for unknown reasons. Furthermore, 11 of the abovementioned 14 incidents were classified as Power and Governance conflicts related to either Explosions or Military Deployment.
