Afifah Saab: The founder of the first Druze women’s magazine

Date of Mouvement:
January 1, 1919 to December 31, 1919

Afifah Saab joined the women’s magazines movement in Shouwaifat by establishing her magazine, al-Khidr (A Woman’s Chamber), a woman’s literary, scientific monthly magazine with an additional focus on health(1)Naguib al-Ba’ney, صحافيات لبنانيات رائدات واديبات مبدعات, Beirut, Nofal, 2007, p. 208. . The magazine was published for eight years from 1919-1927, and welcomed all writers of the era. It is often regarded as the first Druze women’s magazine. Saab was concerned with women’s rights in general and with the rights of Druze women in particular, and so discussing the status of Druze women became a recurring theme in her speeches(2)Naguib al-Ba’ney, صحافيات لبنانيات رائدات واديبات مبدعات, Beirut, Nofal, 2007, p. 212-213..
