Protesters smash windows of nearby shops during the demonstration in Beirut
Protesters in Beirut have dispersed following violent clashes with security forces near Beirut’s Nijmeh Square Sunday evening. Clashes between protesters and riot police continued for more than four hours. Protesters hurled fireworks and rocks at riot police and attempted to climb atop newly-reinforced metal barricades that block the entrance to Parliament. They also smashed the windows of nearby shops, including the Downtown Beirut branch of chocolate shop Patchi and a branch of the state-run telecoms company Alfa. Police responded with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons.
