Dozens of Palestinians protested Tuesday in front of Movenpick hotel in Beirut where a UNRWA meeting was ongoing, to protest UNRWA plans to delegate certain services to other agencies. The commissioner-general of the agency, Philippe Lazzarini, and Chairman of the Lebanese Palestinian Dialogue Committee (LPDC) Bassel al-Hassan held a joint press conference to tackle the latest developments regarding UNRWA. Palestinian flags were waved, and placards calling on UNRWA to continue its work which guarantees "stability in the region." "The only alternative to UNRWA is the right of return for Palestinian refugees," read some of the banners. UNRWA plans to delegate certain services to other agencies, to cope with the decline in financial donations, provoking the indignation of the Palestinians who see in this project a disengagement of the international community towards them.

نظّم عدد من اللاجئين الفلسطينيين في لبنان اليوم، وقفةً احتجاجيةً أمام مقرّ انعقاد الاجتماع الاستشاري لوكالة «الأونروا» في بيروت، للتأكيد على رفض الاقتراح المقدّم لنقل تفويض بعض الخدمات التي تقدّمها الوكالة إلى منظمات دولية أخرى. ويعتبر اللاجئون والمنظمات الفلسطينية أنّ تقليص خدمات «الأونروا» هو مقدِّمة لنسف الدور الأساسي الذي تلعبه الوكالة على مستوى حقوق الشعب الفلسطيني وقضيته. وكان المفوّض العام لـ«الأونروا»، فيليب لازاريني، قد أشار في رسالة له في نيسان الماضي، إلى إمكانية الشراكة مع مؤسسات أممية أخرى لتقديم الخدمات للّاجئين، بهدف تخفيف الأعباء المالية عن الوكالة.
