Outpouring of anger against Bisri Dam at World Bank

BEIRUT: Dozens of people gathered in front of the World Bank in Downtown Beirut Tuesday evening to protest against the controversial Bisri Dam.

Demonstrators held up signs that read, "The World Bank is destroying our land," and chanted against the construction of the dam in Mount Lebanon.

Activists say the World Bank-funded project would cause immense environmental harm to the densely forested area, which contains farmland and a large number of ruins and heritage sites.

The World Bank and the Council for Development and Reconstruction, the state body overseeing the project, have said it would provide essential drinking water to the greater Beirut area and that they would move the ruins to another location.
