One week on, thousands of Lebanese protestors march for justice
Thousands of protesters marched along the shattered ruins of Beirut’s port Tuesday, marking exactly one week since a deadly explosion ripped through the heart of the city, killing at least 171 people and injuring thousands more.
As the sun began to set, a minute’s silence was held at 6:08 p.m. local time, the precise moment on Aug. 4 that nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded at the city’s port – material which it emerged earlier Tuesday the government had been warned about as recently as last month.
As they stood mute, church bells and mosque loudspeakers alike echoed across the city.
