Families of Beirut port blast victims stage a sit-in outside the head of the Higher Judicial Council's home to protest the council's decision to appoint an alternate judge in the Beirut blast probe

Families of the victims of the Beirut port explosion held a sit-in Thursday, in front of the house of the head of the Higher Judicial Council, Judge Souheil Abboud in the town of Ballouneh, Kesrouan, to protest against the Council's decision to appoint an alternate investigative judge in the case of the August 4, 2020 blast. The families carried pictures of their children and demanded the independence of the judiciary and for Judge Tarek Bitar to continue to complete the investigation into the port explosion. Army units were deployed in front of Abboud’s house. The families were met with security forces, who blocked the entrance to the building, as protesters versed messages to the council's head on a megaphone.
