Cry of the Depositors and United organise a sit-in in downtown Beirut to protest the draft budget and the theft of deposits
وطنية - أفاد مندوب "الوكالة الوطنية للاعلام" بأن "تحالف متحدون" و"صرخة المودعين" نفذا وقفة احتجاجية أمام جامع محمد الأمين في ساحة الشهداء. وألقى رئيس "صرخة المودعين" علاء خورشيد كلمة طالب فيها "السلطة باسترجاع أموال المودعين التي نهبت". وأكد "الاستمرار في الدفاع عن حقوقنا لان القضاء لن ينظر إلى مطالبنا المحقة"، معتبرا أن "المسؤولية تقع على الرؤساء الثلاثة وحاكم مصرف لبنان رياض سلامة لان رواتب الوزراء والنواب وجميع موظفي القطاع العام والمؤسسات العسكرية هي من أموال المودعين". بعدها توجه المعتصمون إلى بنك "بيروت".
نُقِل المودع محمد الشريف إلى المستشفى بعدما اعتدت عليه قوى الأمن الداخلي، اليوم، خلال تحرّك احتجاجيّ في وسط بيروت رفضاً لمشروع الموازنة وسرقة المودعين. وكانت القوى الأمنية قد انتشرت في محيط فرع بنك عودة في منطقة باب إدريس لحماية المصرف من التحرّك الذي دعت إليه مجموعتا «متّحدون» و«صرخة المودعين»، والذي انطلق من ساحة الشهداء إلى محيط بنك عودة حيث جرى الاعتداء.
Dozens of depositors gathered in Beirut on Friday morning to demonstrate against banks’ severe restrictions on customers accessing their money, imposed since the onset of the economic crisis in 2019. According to the National News Agency, members of both the groups Cry of the Depositors and Muttahidoun, or ‘United’, participated in the demonstration that started in front of the Mohammad al-Amin mosque in Downtown Beirut. The head of Cry of the Depositors, Alaa Khorchid, called on the authorities to “return the money stolen from depositors…The responsibility lies with the three presidents [president, prime minister and parliament speaker] and the central bank Governor Riad Salameh.” Some demonstrators shouted slogans against Salameh who is accused by many of being responsible for the economic collapse. The demonstrators then headed to the headquarters of Bank of Beirut.
Depositor Mohammed Sharif was taken to hospital after the Internal Security Forces assaulted him today, during a demonstration in downtown Beirut protesting the draft budget and the theft of deposits. The ISF were deployed around Audi Bank in Bab Idriss to protect the bank from the protest called for by the groups "Muttahidoun" and "Sarkhat Al-Moudi'een." The march began in Martyrs' Square and reached the vicinity of Bank Audi, where the attack took place.
