Contract lecturers at the Lebanese University began a sit-in in front of the Grand Serail yesterday to demand full-time employment from the university. According to one of the protesters, the sit-in will continue until their demands for normal employment and benefits are met. Contract lecturers at the Lebanese university have protested repeatedly since October to call for full-time employment contracts, under which they would receive an array of benefits, including access to a pension scheme, insurance, end of service salaries and better payment. “We address the three leaders [president, prime minister and parliament speaker] and the supervisors of the [Lebanese] University and urge them to save this national edifice from collapsing so that it doesn’t fall on everybody,” Hamed Ahmad, a spokesperson for the contract lecturers, was quoted by the state-run National News Agency as saying. According to the NNA, Ahmad also called for an emergency meeting “to issue the top-priority files, at the top of which is the employment of contract lecturers at the Lebanese University, which would guarantee stability in their jobs.”

وطنية - نفذت اللجنة التمثيلية للاساتدة المتعاقدين بالساعة في الجامعة اللبنانية اعتصاما، عند مدخل السرايا الحكومية، حيث تم نصب خيمة في المكان. وألقى الدكتور حامد حامد كلمة اعتبر فيها، ان "الجامعة اللبنانية تتعرض اليوم للتدمير الممنهج لأنها تجسد مستقبل الهوية اللبنانية الوطنية الجامعة، وهي العامل الأساس في الترقي الإجتماعي وتحقيق العدالة". وقال: "وعليه نتوجه إلى الرؤساء الثلاثة والى القيمين على الجامعة أن ينقذوا هدا الصرح الوطني من الانهيار كي لا يسقط على رؤوس الجميع". وطالب باجتماع طارئ "لاقرار الملفات الملحة، وعلى رأسها ملف التفرغ للاساتدة المتعاقدين بالساعة في الجامعة اللبنانية بما يضمن لهم نوعا من الاستقرار الوظيفي، لا سيما وأن ملف التفرغ قد انتهى به المطاف إلى الامانة العامة لمجلس الوزراء، والا سوف نضطر إلى التصعيد، بداية بالاعتصام المفتوح أمام السرايا". وألقى الدكتور مشتبى مرتضى كلمة باسم  الاساتدة المتفرغين، طالب فيها الناس "برفع الصوت من أجل الحفاظ على الجامعة الوطنية، لان المسؤولين غير معنين بهذا الموضوع"، مشيرا الى "أن هناك خطرا وجوديا على مستقبل التعليم العالي". وقال: "نحن متوقفون عن التعليم حتى تأتي الحلول، لأن هدا الملف يجب أن يبث في الدرجة الأولى قبل فوات الأوان".
