Civil bodies organise a demonstration outside the Parliament to protest the 2022 draft budget
Dozens of demonstrators gathered Wednesday morning in downtown Beirut to protest against the 2022 draft budget, which had been slated for discussion by Parliament before the day's session was postponed until Thursday. "My husband earns LL4 million [about $112 at the current parallel market exchange rate]," protester Marcelle Tabcheh, whose husband is a soldier, told L'Orient-Le Jour. "If the budget is passed, his salary will drop to LL2 million [$55]" due to proposed changes to the country's lira-to-dollar exchange rate. the One Lebanon Coalition, the National Federation of Trade Unions and Employees in Lebanon and other civil bodies called for a sit-in at Parliament Wednesday to protest the day’s session discussing the 2022 draft budget law.
وشهد محيط ساحة النجمة سلسلة تحرّكات "من أجل إسقاط الموازنة"، بدعوة من متقاعدي القوى المسلحة والمودعين، وائتلاف لبنان الواحد، بمشاركة القوى والهيئات الأهليَّة والاتحادات والروابط والجمعيَات والمتقاعدين المدنيَّين والعسكريَّين. وكان من المفترض أن يبدأ المجلس النيابي اليوم درس مشروع قانون الموازنة العامة للعام 2022. وقد خصّص الرئيس نبيه بري ثلاث جلسات لدرس ومناقشة وإقرار هذه الموازنة، التي يعتبرها صندوق النقد الدولي شرطاً أساسياً من الشروط "التشريعية" المطلوبة من لبنان للسير قدماً في توقيع اتفاق على برنامج تمويلي مع المؤسسة الدولية.
