 Activists held a sit-in at the Beirut Justice Palace Thursday to protest “repeated crimes against children and marginalized communities,” Al-Jadeed television reported. The protest comes days after a former Lebanese Army soldier was arrested on suspicion of molesting multiple children, a case that was transferred to the investigating judge in the Bekaa. Among those attending the protest were MPs Paula Yaacoubian, Najat Aoun and Cynthia Zarazir, along with performer Maya Diab. “We want to raise our voices to attain justice, because [sexual molesters have] ruined the lives of many children. He’s a criminal, a monster and courts should carry out the most severe punishment,” Aoun said, explaining that the call for trying the case in civil, rather than military, court was to guarantee that the trial is “continuously monitor[ed].”

Several activists and associations organized a stand-in in front of Beirut’s Justice Palace to protest the rapes of a number of children in Qaa and to refuse any “compromise or interventions by the area’s political or religious authorities pressuring victims’ families to urge them not to file lawsuits against the criminal.” Sources told Megaphone that the perpetrator confessed to raping at least five boys between 14 and 17 years. The number of victims is likely to increase as the communications data is still being analyzed by the Information Branch. Despite the revelation of the horrors of the crimes, influential people in Qaa are still attempting to cover them up: Mayor Bashir Matar called for a meeting with Father Elian Nasrallah, Father Boulos Riachy, school principles, notaries and MP Samer Toum in order to “contain the story on social media and keep it between the residents of Qaa,” according to Bashir.

نظّمت قوى ومجموعات تغييرية وقفةً أمام قصر العدل في بيروت، استنكاراً للجرائم المتكرّرة بحق الأطفال والفئات المهمشة في لبنان، وآخرها جريمة القاع. وشارك في الوقفة عدد من النواب التغييريين، بينهم النائبة بولا يعقوبيان، سينتيا زرازير، نجاة صليبا، كما شاركت الفنانة مايا دياب.

نفّذت مجموعة من الناشطين والناشطات والجمعيات وقفةً تضامنية أمام قصر العدل في بيروت احتجاجاً على جرائم الاغتصاب التي ارتُكِبت بحقّ عدد من الأطفال في بلدة القاع البقاعية ورفضاً لأيّ «تسويات أو تدخّلات لجهات سياسية أو دينية نافذة في المنطقة للضغط على ذوي الضحايا بهدف حضّهم على عدم الادّعاء على المجرم. وأشارت مصادر خاصة لميغافون إلى أنّ الجاني اعترف باغتصاب 5 شبّان على الأقلّ تتراوح أعمارهم بين 14 و17 عاماً، لكنّ أعداد الضحايا ما زالت قابلة للارتفاع مع استمرار تحليل داتا الإتصالات لدى المكتب الفني في فرع المعلومات. ورغم انكشاف هول الجرائم، استمرّ نافذون في القاع في محاولاتهم للتستّر على الجريمة فعقدوا اجتماعاً بدعوة من رئيس البلدية بشير مطر ضمّ كلاً من الأب إليان نصرالله والأب بولس الرياشي ومديري المدارس والمخاتير والنائب سامر التوم، بهدف «عدم إثارة الموضوع على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي وحصره بين أبناء القاع فقط»، بحسب بشير.
