This interactive timeline documents how social protection in Lebanon was historically constructed and put in place, starting from the enactment of the labour code in 1946 till the launch of the Daem platform last year.
This innovative research tool provides the key historical events and milestones that have structured the social protection system, as well as the political and social achievements and advancement of social protection in Lebanon.
This timeline, that we invite you to read along the “Historical Mapping of Lebanese Organised Labor” (scroll down for more) not only presents a chronological account of the construction of the social protection sector in the country, but also highlights its structural fragmentation and exclusionary nature.

Social policy making in Lebanon is characterised by its reactive nature. The paper by Dr. Rossana Tufaro, notably illustrates how many social protection policies have been introduced in the country, following workers groups’ mobilizations.
The paper provides a contextualized and accessible history of Lebanese organized labor since the mandate period, and identifies the main actors, demands, historical events, urgencies and constraints shaping the articulation and the trajectories of (de/) mobilization of workers’ collective agency and organization.
