About the newsletter
Why the Gender Equity Newsletter?
This newsletter aims to connect gender actors and practitioners in Lebanon through the exchange expertise, in an attempt to create a space for better collaboration, networking, and equal access to knowledge, research, and information. Each issue will cover the work of actors, their activities, and projects, in addition to recommending relevant resources and tools, as well as information and statistics relevant to gender work in Lebanon
The gender equity newsletter is a part of the Gender Collaborative Information and Knowledge Network- a project by Lebanon Support in partnership with Diakonia
The Gender Collaborative Information and Knowledge Network is an online collaborative platform. It is part of Lebanon Support’sCivil Society Knowledge Centre (CSKC) and brings together civil society organizations, researchers, practitioners, and experts to enhance local and national capacities, improve access to knowledge and its development, and provide evidence-based research, information, and literature on gender issues and concerns.
لماذا نشرة العدالة الجندرية؟
تهدف هذه النشرة إلى الربط بين الجهات الفاعلة والعاملين في مجال إشكاليات النوع الاجتماعي في لبنان من خلال تبادل الخبرات، في محاولة لخلق مساحة للتشبيك وتفعيل التعاون، والمساواة في الوصول إلى المعرفة والأبحاث والمعلومات. يغطي كل عدد عمل الجهات الفاعلة وأنشطتها ومشاريعها، بالإضافة إلى الإيصاء بموارد وبأدوات ذات الصلة، وأيضاً المعلومات والإحصاءات ذات الصلة بالعمل في مجال إشكاليات النوع الاجتماعي في لبنان.
تشكل نشرة العدالة الجندرية جزءاً من شبكة معلومات العدالة الجندرية – مشروع لمركز دعم لبنان (Lebanon Support) بالشراكة مع دياكونيا Diakonia
ان شبكة معلومات العدالة الجندرية هي منصة تعاونية على الانترنت. وهي جزء من بوابة المعرفة للمجتمع المدني (CSKC) التابعة لمركز دعم لبنان، تجمع بين منظمات المجتمع المدني والباحثين والعاملين والخبراء لتعزيز القدرات المحلية والوطنية، وتحسين الوصول إلى المعرفة وتطويرها، وتقديم البحوث القائمة على الأدلة، بالإضافة إلى المعلومات والأدبيات في مجال قضايا النوع الاجتماعي.

The Gender Dictionary, published by Lebanon Support, is a practical bilingual tool, based on multidisciplinary research and consultations with local gender actors (academics, experts, activists, practitioners).
This bilingual dictionary examines the definitions, history and localized usages of gender terms and concepts. It is constituted of 25 entries, organized in alphabetical order with their equivalent and definitions in both Arabic and English. Each entry or definition proposes a general presentation of the term, a synthetic overview of its inherent debates with a focus on its local usages and understandings. Read more.
قاموس الجندر هو أداًة عمليـًة ثنائية اللغة تستند إلى البحوث الأصلية المتعددة الاختصاصات والمشاورات مع فاعلين محليين في مجال الجندر (الأكاديميين والأكاديميات، والخبراء والخبيرات، والناشطين والناشطات، والمزاولين والمزاولات في مجال النوع الاجتماعي)، نشره مركز دعم لبنان.
ويتأّلف القاموس الثنائي اللغة مـن ٢٥ مدخلاً، تمّ تبويبها حسـب الترتيب الأبجدي مع مقابل كّل مصطلح تعريفه باللغتين العربية والإنكليزية. يقدّم كل مدخل وتعريف عرضاً عاماً للمصطلح ولمحة تركيبية عـن المناقشات الملازمة له مع التركيز على اسـتعمالاته وأوجه فهمه المحلية. اقرأ المزيد.

This report aims to present a general overview of the current local gender actors and their interventions in Lebanon. It also aims to shed light on the complex relationship between women’s organisations in Lebanon and their donors. In this context, it is important to ask to what extent the funding tends to shape project design at a local level? And moreover, does funding of short-term and service-oriented projects edulcorate the political change that these organisations could bring?
يسعى هذا التقرير إلى تقديم لمحة عامة عن الجهات الفاعلة الحالية في مجال قضايا الجندر وتدخلاتها في لبنان. كما يسعى إلى تسليط الضوء على العلاقة المعقدة بين المنظمات التي تعنى بشؤون المرأة في لبنان والجهات الممِّولة لها. ومن الأهمية بمكان في هذا الإطار الإجابة على الأسئلة التالية: إلى أي مدى تساهم توجهات التمويل في تحديد ملامح تصميم المشاريع على المستوى المحلي؟ وهل أن المشاريع القصيرة الأمد والمتحورة حول توفير الخدمات تساهم في تنقية التغيير الإجتماعي الذي يمكن لهذه المنظمات إحداثه؟ اقرأ المزيد.

LebMASH Lebanese Medical Association for Sexual Health - الجمعية الطبية اللبنانية للصحة الجنسية
LebMASH is a non profit organization governed by a board of eight health care professionals from various disciplines with the mission of Advancing healthcare for LGBT individuals and sexual/reproductive health for all individuals in Lebanon.
In 2013, LebMASH worked closely with the Lebanese Psychological Association and the Lebanese psychiatric association which lead to these two organizations issuing position statements stating that homosexuality is not a disease and does not require treatment and shedding the light on the futility and dangers of conversion therapy.
In 2016, LebMASH launched the video “Shu El Sabab” reinforcing the fact that homosexuality is not a mental illness and explaining that conversion therapy is counterproductive and can lead to many negative health consequences.
Gender inequality comes in many shapes and forms given that we still live in a patriarchal society in Lebanon. Since LebMASH is a health non profit organization and through our experience we noticed that women sexual health, orientation and sexual identity is one of the main poorly tackled issues in Lebanon. Women’s sexuality in Lebanon is still taboo, which complicates their access to health services and endangers their safety in case they were vocal about their sexuality. Gender equality starts from giving women equal rights and deconstructing the power hierarchies and structural violence that women undergo in society, and extends to acknowledging their sexuality and not as unspoken of taboo.
LebMASH believes the main demands of gender actors should focus:

Objecting and fighting conversion therapy that still takes place in psychological and psychiatric practices with lesbian and trans women

Standardizing the healthcare of trans men and women and elevating it to a safe, consent-based and evidence-based practice
-
Breaking the taboos around women sexuality, virginity, and sexual orientation
-
Providing women with better access to health care on all levels, including gynecologists and therapists
-
Fighting sexual harassment and rape and providing safe spaces for women to be vocal about these violations
-
Gaining access to information and resources about contraception and other reproductive health services without facing any discrimination and while valuing women’s ownership of their own bodies
الجمعية الطبية اللبنانية للصحة الجنسية هي منظمة لا تبغي الربح يديرها مجلسٌ مؤلَّفٌ من ثمانية أخصائيين في مجال الرعاية الصحية من مختلف الإختصاصات مهمتهم تعزيز الرعاية الصحية للمثليين والمثليات والثنائيين والثنائيات والمتحوّلين والمتحوّلات جنسيًا، كما الصحة الجنسية/والإنجابية للجميع في لبنان.
في العام ٢٠١٣، عملت الجمعية الطبية اللبنانية للصحة الجنسية بالتعاون مع الجمعية اللبنانية لعلم النفس، وجمعية الطب النفسي اللبنانية، ما حمل هاتين الجمعيتين إلى إصدار بيان موقِف أعلنتا فيه أن المثلية ليست بمرض مرض، ولا تستلزم بالتالي علاجا، كما إلى تسليط الضوء على انعدام جدوى العلاج التحويلي، ومخاطره.
وفي العام ٢٠١٦، أطلقت الجمعية الطبية اللبنانية للصحة الجنسية فيلما تثقيفيا بعنوان "شو السبب" لدعم فكرة أن المثلية الجنسية ليست بمرض عقلي وشرح أن العلاج التحويلي لا يؤدي إلى الغاية المتوخاة منه، بل على العكس فإنه من الممكن أن يؤدي إلى الكثير من النتائج الصحية السلبية.
تتخِّذ حالات عدم المساوات بين الجنسين أشكالا ومظاهر متعدِّدة، ذلك أننا ما زلنا نعيش في مجتمع بطريركي. ونظرا إلى أن الجمعية الطبية اللبنانية للصحة الجنسية هي منظمة لا تبغي الربح تعنى بالقضايا الصحية، فإنها خلصت من خلال العمل في هذا المجال إلى نتيجة مفادها أن المسائل المرتبطة بصحة المرأة الجنسية، وتوجهها الجنسي، كما هويتها الجنسية تدخل ضمن القضايا التي قلما يتم التطرق إليها في لبنان. والواقع أن موضوع جنسانية المرأة في لبنان ما زال من المحرمات، ما يُعقِّد وصولها إلى الخدمات الصحية، ويعرِّض سلامتها للخطر في حال تحدَّثت عن نشاطها الجنسي. فالمساواة بين الجنسَيْن تبدأ بالمساواة بين الرجل والمرأة في الحقوق، وبتفكيك ما تواجهه المرأة في المجتمع من هرميات السلطة والعنف الهيكلي، وصولا إلى الإقرار بجنسانيَّتها، بدلا من اعتبار الموضوع من المحرمات.
وترى الجمعية الطبية اللبنانية للصحة الجنسية أن مطالب الجهات الفاعلة الرئيسة في قضايا الجندر يجب أن تُركِّز على :
- رفض ومكافحة العلاج التحويلي الذي ما زال يُطبَّق في علم النفس، والطب النفسي مع النساء المثليات، والمتحوِّلات جنسيا،
- توحيد المعايير الخاصة بعملية توفير الرعاية الصحية للمتحولين، والمتحوِّلات لتغدو هذه العملية ممارسةً آمنة، وقائمة على الأدلة، والموافقة،
- كسر المحرَّمات المرتبطة بنشاط المرأة الجنسي، وعذريتها، وتوجهها الجنسي،
- توفير وصول أفضل للمرأة إلى الرعاية الصحية على كافة المستويات، بما في ذلك استشارة الأطباء النسائيين، والمعالجين،
- مكافحة التحرش الجنسي، والإغتصاب، فضلا عن توفير مساحات آمنة للنساء للتعبير عما يتعرضن له من انتهاكات،
- تحقيق الوصول إلى المعلومات، والموارد المرتبطة بوسائل منع الحمل، وسواها من خدمات الصحة الإنجابية، بدون التعرُّض للتمييز، مع تثمين ملكية المرأة لجسدها.

From Lebanon
On the 15th of May, two days before the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, activists backing the LGBT movement staged a protest outside the Hbeish gendarmerie in Beirut demanding the abolition of the law criminalising relations “against nature” and the release of four transgender women. The last protest of this kind was held in Beirut in 2012.
Hundreds of migrant domestic marched in Beirut on the occasion of International Workers Day, denouncing their working conditions under the Kafala system.
A transgender man was granted the right to rectify his legal status in civil registry by Lebanon’s Court of Appeals. Judge Jannet Hanna, who issued the verdict, emphasized the importance of allowing sex change to relieve the person from the psychological and social sufferings.

Around the world
An anti-harassment rally was organised in Amman to raise awareness on the verbal harassment experienced by women when they go out alone.
Amnesty International published its policy on protection of sex workers from human rights violations and abuse which calls for decriminalisation of consensual sex work, along with four research reports on these issues.
A campaign gathering female politicians, journalists has been launched in France against sexism and sexual harassment in politics, with seventeen female politicians across the political spectrum signing an appeal pledging to make public all sexist behaviour and harassment.

في ١٥ أيار، وقبل يومَين من اليوم العالمي لمناهضة كراهية المثلية الجنسية، ومغايري الهوية الجنسانية ومزدوجي الميل الجنسي، نفذ الناشطون والناشطات الداعمين لحركة المثليين والمثليات والثنائيين والثنائيات والمتحوّلين والمتحوّلات جنسيًا وقفة احتجاجية امام فصيلة راس بيروت (مخفر حبيش سابقا) للمطالبة بإلغاء القانون الذي يُجرِّم إقامة العلاقات التي تُعتبر "منافية للطبيعة"، وبالإفراج عن أربع نساء متحولات جنسيا. ويُذكر أن آخر اعتصام من هذا النوع نُظم في بيروت في العام ٢٠١٢.
نظّم مئات العمال والعاملات المنزليين مسيرةً في بيروت بمناسبة عيد العمال للتنديد بظروف عملهم في ظل نظام الكفالة.
صدر عن محكمة الإستئناف في لبنان قرارٌ مُنح بموجبه رجل متحوِّل جنسيا الحق في تصحيح قيده في سجلات النفوس. وشددت القاضية جانيت حنا التي أصدرت القرار على أهمية السماح بتغيير الجنس للتخفيف من وطأة المعاناة النفسية والإجتماعية على الشخص المعني

نُظم تجمُّع مناهض للتحرُّش في عمان لزيادة الوعي بشأن التحرُّش اللفظي الذي تتعرض له النساء عندما يخرجن بمفردهن.
نشرت منظَّمة العفو الدولية سياستها المتعلقة بحماية العاملين والعاملات في مجال الجنس من التعرض لإنتهاكات حقوق الإنسان، وأشكال الإساءة، مشفوعةً بتقاريرها البحثية عن هذه المسائل. وتدعو هذه السياسة إلى نزع الصفة الجنائية عن العمل بالتراضي في مجال الجنس.
اُطلقت في فرنسا حملة تضم نساء من مضماري السياسة والصحافة ضد التحيّز الجنساني، والتحرش الجنسي في عالم السياسة، مع توقيع سبع عشرة سياسية ينتمين إلى تيارات سياسية مختلفة على بيان مشترك يتعهَّدن فيه بإخراج جميع السلوكيات المتحيِّزة جنسيا، والتحرش الجنسي، إلى العلن.
