Bassem Chit fellowship for the study of activism
Bassem Chit was a founding member of Lebanon Support and was its Executive Director between 2008 and 2014. He had more than 14 years professional experience in information and knowledge management in development and humanitarian contexts in parallel to his social and political activism, in Lebanon and the region. The Bassem Chit fellowship for the study of activism is a one-year post doctoral fellowship based in Beirut, Lebanon. The fellowship is a joint initiative of Lebanon Support, the Arab Council for the Social Sciences, the Orient-Institut Beirut, and Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Beirut Office. The fellowship aims to give early career scholars (0-3 years out of the Phd) in the social sciences the opportunity to conduct research on activism in the Arab world. Disciplinary and Thematic Focus:
The Bassem Chit Fellowship program aims at targeting scholars in the social sciences, particularly in the fields of political science, economics, sociology, anthropology, education, demography, media and cultural studies, among others., We also encourage applications from the humanities, including applications covering literature, cultural studies, history, philosophy and arts.
During the fellowship, the scholar will be requested to:
- Assist in Lebanon Support’s mapping of collective actions and produce quarterly digests
- Produce an in-depth research paper on their research topic to be published on Lebanon Support’s Civil Society Knowledge Centre
- Organise a round table at the OIB around their research
- Participate and present a paper at the ACSS Fourth Conference that will be held on April 12-14 2019
- Organise a round table event on issues pertaining to collective action at Lebanon Support.
The fellowship duration is 12 months, and the earliest starting date is September 2018. The fellowship is hosted at Lebanon Support, and funded by both the Arab Council for the Social Sciences and Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Beirut Office.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants are eligible if they:
- Are citizens or nationals of an Arab country: An Arab country is defined by its membership in the League of Arab States. The term “national” refers to full-time and long-term residents of an Arab State, including those who do not have citizenship, as in the case of stateless refugees. Arab scholars residing outside the region at the time of application would be eligible only if they hold an Arab citizenship and are not in a tenure-track position and/or do not have access to research resources from their institution and/or country of residence. Accepted fellows are required to spend their 12 months fellowship period in Beirut at Lebanon Support’s offices.
- Are junior scholars (0-3 years out of the Phd) who have a doctoral degree in a social science or humanities discipline (obtained from within or outside the Arab region). Applicants who did not obtain their PhDs at the time of application will be ineligible.
- Have high quality academic credentials including proficiency in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods. Applicants are required to submit a proposal (10-15 pages) building on their doctoral dissertation. Proposals that are not based on or not relevant to the applicant’s PhD dissertation will be disqualified. Proposals should highlight the applicant’s academic credentials and outline a research problem. Applicants should also provide a publications plan in addition to a 3-year career plan.
- Have versatility to take on organisational roles when required, and the ability to work independently as well as with teams as outlined.

- June 20, 2018: Application forms are available online.
- July 15, 2018: Deadline for submissions.
- Last week of July 2018: Decisions are communicated to applicants.
- August 2018: Accepted applicants sign their contracts.
- September 2018: Fellowship starts.
- April 2019: Present at the ACSS Fourth Biennial Conference in Beirut-Lebanon.

زمالة باسم شيت لدراسة النشاطية هي زمالة لمدّة سنة للحاصلين على شهادة الدكتوراه مقرّها في بيروت، لبنان. الزمالة مبادرة مشتركة بين مركز دعم لبنان، والمجلس العربي للعلوم الاجتماعية، والمعهد الألماني للأبحاث الشرقية ـ بيروت، ومؤسّسة روزا لوكسمبورغ ـ مكتب بيروت. تهدف الزمالة إلى منح الباحثين الناشئين (الذين لم يمضِ أكثر من ثلاث سنوات على نيلهم شهادة الدكتوراه) في مجال العلوم الاجتماعية فرصة إجراء بحثٍ عن النشاطية في العالم العربي. وتقبل زمالة باسم شيت المقترحات باللغات العربية والإنكليزية والفرنسية.
التركيز التخصّصي والمواضيعي
يسعى برنامج زمالة باسم شيت إلى استهداف العلماء الناشئين الباحثين في مجال العلوم الاجتماعية، ولاسيما في مجالات العلوم السياسية والاقتصاد وعلم الاجتماع والأنثروبولوجيا والتعليم وعلم السكّان والدراسات الإعلامية والثقافية وغيرها. كما نشجّع المتقدّمين من مجالات العلوم الإنسانية، بما في ذلك تلك التي تغطّي الأدب والدراسات الثقافية والتاريخ والفلسفة والفنون
أثناء الزمالة، سوف يُطلب من الباحث القيام بما يلي
المساعدة في المسح الذي يقوم به مركز دعم لبنان للتحركات الإجتماعيّة وفي إنتاج الملخّصات الفصليّة
إنتاج ورقة بحثية حول موضوع بحثه، تنشَر في بوابة المعرفة للمجتمع المدني التابع لمركز دعم لبنان
تنظيم طاولة مستديرة في المعهد الألماني للأبحاث الشرقية حول بحثه
المشاركة وتقديم بحث في المؤتمر الرابع للمجلس العربي للعلوم الاجتماعية والذي سينعقد بين 12 و14 نيسان/ أبريل 2019

معايير الأهلية والجدول الزمني
معايير الأهلية
يكون المتقدّمون مؤهّلين في حال تمتّعوا بما يلي
- أن يكونوا مواطنين أو رعايا في دولةٍ عربية: نعني بالدولة العربية الدولة المنتسبة إلى جامعة الدول العربية. ونعني "بالرعيّة" المقيم دائمًا وعلى المدى الطويل في دولة عربية، بمن في ذلك من لا يحمل جنسيّة تلك الدولة، كما هو حال اللاجئين. ويحقّ للباحثين العرب المقيمين خارج المنطقة المشاركة في البرنامج، شرط أن يحملوا جنسية عربية وألا يكونوا يشغلون منصب أستاذ دائم و/أو ألا يملكون فرصة النفاذ إلى الموارد البحثية في المؤسسة التي يعملون فيها و/أو الدولة التي يقيمون فيها عند تقديم الطلب. ويُفترض بالزملاء المقبولين قضاء مدّة زمالتهم التي تبلغ 12 شهراً في مكتب مركز دعم لبنان ببيروت
- أن يكونوا باحثين ناشئين: يستهدف هذا البرنامج الباحثين الذين لم يمضِ أكثر من ثلاث سنوات على نيلهم شهادة الدكتوراه في العلوم الاجتماعية (يجوز تحصيل الشهادة من الدول العربية أو خارجها). يجب أن يكون المرشّحون قد نالوا شهادة الدكتوراه عند تقديم الطلب
- أن تكون لديهم مؤهّلاتٌ أكاديميةٌ ذات جودة عالية، بما في ذلك إتقان مناهج البحث الكيفي و/ أو الكمّي. على المرشّحين تقديم مقترح مشروع (بين 10 و15 صفحة) يقوم بالبناء على أطروحة الدكتوراه الخاصة بهم. . إن المقترحات التي لا تكون مبنية على أطروحة الدكتوراه أو مرتبطة بها تعتبر غيرمقبولة. وعلى المقترح أن يبيّن مؤهّلات المرشحّين الأكاديمية ويحدّد مسألة بحثية مهمّة. وعلى المرشّحين أيضًا تقديم خطة منشورات إلى جانب خطة مهنية لثلاث سنوات
- أن يتمتّعوا بالقدرة على تولّي أدوارٍ تنظيميةٍ عندما يُطلب منهم ذلك، وبإمكانية العمل بشكلٍ مستقلٍّ وكذلك مع فرق عمل

نيسان/ أبريل 2019: يقدم الزملاء أبحثاهم خلال المؤتمر الرابع للمجلس العربي للعلوم الإجتماعية
