The state prosecutor issued an order Monday to sue people who post material on social media that poses an insult to the presidency. Ghassan Oueidat ordered the Central Criminal Investigation Bureau to begin investigations to uncover the identity of people who shared pictures and comments on social media that insult the president and his position. Those behind the posts in question – that contain provocative words and photoshopped pictures of the president – will be legally sued by the public prosecution on charges of defamation, libel, slander and insult and for making the posts viewable to the public. Insulting the president is a crime punishable by Lebanese law that could result in imprisonment for two years.
