Parliament extends the 'provisional twelfth' emergency spending measure through the end of July
Date:
Wednesday, June 26, 2019
Perhaps the most consequential outcome of the legislative session was an agreement by the lawmakers to extend the “provisional twelfth” spending facility through the end of July, marking the second time it has been pushed past its constitutional limit.
The decision came a day after the chair of Parliament’s Finance and Budget Committee, MP Ibrahim Kanaan, said his committee would finish reviewing the draft budget by “early next week,” before sending it to Parliament’s general assembly for ratification. Cabinet and Parliament have repeatedly missed deadlines to approve the draft, making it necessary for the provisional twelfth to be extended.
