Caretaker Minister of Industry George Bouchikian banned on Thursday the import of bulgur (burghul) without a prior permit from the Ministry of Industry, the state-run National News Agency reported. According to the NNA, Bouchikian explained that the decision was taken to protect the national production of bulgur and Lebanon’s food security. The head of the General Directorate of Cereals and Sugar Beets, Georges Berberi, told L’Orient Today that Lebanon often produces bulgur from local-grown durum wheat and imports a portion of its market needs of bulgur from other countries, mainly Turkey.
