The Interior Ministry said Friday it would shorten a ban on motorcycles in the capital that was imposed in the wake of parliamentary elections, meaning it will be lifted on Sunday rather than Monday. A countrywide ban was first placed on motorcycles over the election weekend, as a security measure. But in the wake of the announcement of election results, groups of men on mopeds roamed Beirut’s streets, with clashes being reported between supporters of the Future Movement and Hezbollah, prompting the ministry to impose on May 7 a 72-hour ban on motorcycles in the capital. Two days later, the ministry extended the ban to last until Monday, May 14. A Friday statement from the ministry announced it had revisited the decision and would shorten the ban by a day.
