Cabinet approves draft law on prisoners' pardon after Roumieh riots

Date:
Tuesday, March 17, 2020

The Cabinet approved Tuesday an urgent draft law aiming to pardon prisoners who have served out their sentences but are still in prison for failing to pay fines, Information Minister Manal Abdel Samad said.

The decision, taken during a Cabinet session chaired by Prime Minister Hassan Diab at the Grand Serail, came apparently in response to inmates of the notorious Roumieh prison, who, concerned over the spread of the coronavirus, staged riots Monday night, expressing anger that a long-awaited general amnesty law has not been passed yet.
