Parliament drops a law to consider Line 29 as delimiting Lebanon’s maritime border with Israel
Parliament rejected an expedited law proposal that would move to consider Line 29 Lebanon’s maritime border with Israel, adding 1,430 square kilometers to the country’s maritime borders and partially encompassing the Karish field — the site where an Israeli vessel was deployed on June 5, resulting in tensions with Lebanon. An expedited status law proposal is a suggested law that the parliament discusses whether or not it should be worked on at the given point in time. If the expedited status law is approved, it is directly discussed and voted on. If the expedited status law does not pass in Parliament, the law is sent to the parliamentary committees for discussion. Under the decree presently in force, Lebanon claims as its exclusive maritime economic zone a smaller geographic area demarcated by Line 23.
