Several residents neighboring a sanitary landfill, which is planned to open in the Akkar village of Srar, managed Thursday to prevent bulldozers from continuing work on the site.
The state-run National News Agency reported that the residents blocked the way of the bulldozers, suspending their work.
NNA said that a protest tent erected on Abboudieh junction in the northern district is still crowded with protesters who reject the establishment of the landfill.
They are preventing garbage trucks from reaching the landfill, it added.
A Cabinet plan to wind down the prolonged and devastating trash crisis overcame a key obstacle Tuesday, as Akkar mayors and mukhtars said they would not stand in the way of a new landfill being opened in Srar in order to ease the garbage pileup in Mount Lebanon and Beirut.
