Hundreds of residents from the northern Lebanese district of Akkar protested against the government’s plan to create a garbage dump in their area Thursday, condemning the ""corrupt political class"" ruling the country and accusing their representatives of ""lying."" The demonstration, held in the main square in the town of Halba, was attended by residents from ""every town and village in the district."" “We withdraw our confidence from all the MPs that we have elected,” one of the organizers cried addressing the crowds. “Shame on you, MPs of Akkar, because you are lying to your people.” The protest comes two days after the Cabinet announced a decision to invest $100 million in the northern district as an incentive for its officials to accept hosting a temporary garbage dump.
