تتناول هذه الدراسة موضوع "العمالة غير النظامية" من منظور عاملين/ات في قطاع الأغذية والمشروبات في لبنان (وتحديدًا النادلين/ات والسقاة في الحانات) في فترة ٢٠٢٢/٢٠٢٣، وتبحث في ظروف العمل والتحديات المتعدّدة التي تواجه هؤلاء العاملين/ات، إضافةً إلى تأثير "العمالة غير النظامية" على حياتهم/هنّ المهنية والشخصية في ظلّ الأزمة الاقتصادية. كما تسلّط الضوء على تغيّر أولويّات هؤلاء العاملين/ات غير النظاميين/ات من تأمين عمل مستقرّ مع تقديمات إلى الاعتماد المفرط على الدخل المتاح والسيولة من أجل تدبير أمورهم/هنّ اليومية.

Casualisation, precarity, and permanent instability of informal workers. A look at the working conditions of waiters and bartenders in Lebanon.

This paper looks at “informal employment” through the lens of workers in the food and beverage service industry (mainly waiters and bartenders) in Lebanon in 2022/2023. It focuses on the labor conditions and multiple challenges faced by these workers, as well as the impact of “informal employment” on the professional and personal lives of these workers in times of economic crisis.

The Lebanese social protection system was from its inception, and through its historical development, a fragmented system characterised by, on the one hand, scattered contributory-based schemes and, on the other, by ineffective and time-bound social assistance programmes. This report addresses the various aspects of the failures and near collapse of the NSSF following the economic and financial crisis in Lebanon since 2019.

هذا التقرير عبارة عن دراسة تحليلية تتناول أثر الأزمة الاقتصادية اللبنانية المتعددة المستويات وتداعياتها على صعيد الحماية الاجتماعية في لبنان. ويهدف التقرير إلى دراسة آليات الحماية الاجتماعية وأنظمة الرعاية الصحية والتغطية الفعلية في لبنان في ظل أزمة اجتماعية واقتصادية مستمرة تعصف بالبلد منذ بدء الانهيار المالي في أواخر العام ۲٠۱۹. تستند الدراسة إلى استطلاعٍ أُجريَ بين شهرَيْ تموز/يوليو وآب/أغسطس ۲٠۲۲، من خلال عيّنة تمثيلية تضم ۱٣۲٧ مُستطلَعًا/ة من الجنسية اللبنانية. لقد كانت العينة متوازنة بين الجنسَيْن، وشملت ۲٦ من الأقضية الموزعة بين جميع المحافظات الثماني.

Unprotected. Survey Report on The Challenges of The Current Social Protection System in Lebanon Amidst The Crisis.

This report analyzes the impact of the multilayered Lebanese economic crisis and its major macroeconomic shocks on the social protection landscape in Lebanon. It aims to examine the social protection mechanisms and effective health care systems and coverages in Lebanon, amid an ongoing social and economic crisis hitting the country since the financial collapse of late 2019. The study is based on a survey conducted between July and August 2022, with a nationally representative sample of 1,327 respondents of Lebanese nationality.

Solidarity As Resistance. Multidimensional Fears, Vulnerabilities and Coping Mechanisms Among Women Leading Households in Lebanon. | التضامُن كفعل مقاومة في وجه الأزمات. الخوف المتعدد الجوانب والهشاشة وآليات التكيّف بين النساء المعيلات لأسرهنّ في لبنان.

This ethnographic study looks at the trajectories and lived experiences of women leading households in Lebanon. It focuses on their challenges and coping mechanisms throughout the economic crisis that unfolded as of the end of 2019. It provides an in-depth investigation of the trajectories of eleven women leading households.

Crisis and Retirement: Elderly in the Public Sector are struggling to secure their needs

Social Insurance in Lebanon accounts for the highest share of Social Protection related expenditures (85% of the total spending – as per the 2019 budget); pensions alone accounted for approximately 3% of the GDP in 2020 and benefited only 2% of the population (World Bank, 2022). Moreover, the pension system in Lebanon covers only civil servants and military personnel, which correspond to less than 10% of the active population (World Bank, 2022).

Aging in Times of Crisis: Old Age Private Sector Workers Facing Growing Social Insecurity in Lebanon

Samir, a 72-year-old taxi driver, has been working 7 days a week for the past two years to be able to afford basic living expenses. He parks his car under the shade of a tree where he takes a nap, it keeps him going until nighttime, “I want to live with dignity and I will work until my last breath to make sure of it.”^{^[1]}
